A brooding portrait of a teacher from the burakumin or pariah caste, whose ancestors performed tasks considered "unclean" by Buddhists or deemed lowly by the ruling classes. He follows his dying father's instructions to hide his origins, and lives a life of tormented secrecy. When he learns about another burakumin who has "come out" to plead for his caste, he decides he must take a stand to reveal his background to his students and friends. A haunting film, Hakai was voted the best film of the year by the Japanese Movie Press Association.
